A Girl’s Autobiography
My name is Yu Ying-Xia. I was born in Xingzi County, Jiangxi Province in 1989. My father was a laborer. My mother is a villager who has not received basic education. I heard when I was little, my family was not well-to-do, but was still up to the average. My father fell ill and died in two and half weeks when I was thirteen. Later on, my family became one of the poorest in Yu’s village.
My paternal grandma is still alive. My mother has to support the family though she has not been in good health. Our life has become more and more difficult. After dwelling upon the problem for a long time, I told Mother “Let me start working otherwise we will not have food to eat or clothes to wear. Our life is indeed too difficult. We do not have enough money, so I will quit school and let my younger brother go to school.” Mother bursted into tears as I told her. Though I would love to attend school, our financial situation would not allow me to do that. I secretly shed tears as my friends went off to school.
